How to tag orders based on preorder offers
STOQ lets you automatically tag Shopify orders that contain preorder products. Tags are configured per offer, so each preorder offer can apply its own set of tags. This makes it easy to filter, organize, and automate workflows for preorder orders in Shopify admin.
How Order Tags Work
Each preorder offer in STOQ has an Order tags field. When a customer places an order that includes a product from that offer, STOQ automatically adds the specified tags to the order in Shopify.
- Tags are applied per offer — different offers can have different tags.
- You can add multiple tags by separating them with commas (e.g.,
preorder,ship-later). - Tags appear on the order in Shopify admin, so you can use them to filter orders, create automations, or identify preorder orders at a glance.
Add Tags to a Preorder Offer
Set up order tags for a specific preorder offer.
- In the STOQ app, go to Preorders > Offers.
- Click the offer you want to tag orders for.
- Scroll down to the Limits & Terms section in the offer editor.
- Find the Orders heading and the Order tags field.
- Enter one or more tags, separated by commas (e.g.,
preorder,ship-later). - Click Save at the top of the page.
From this point on, any new order containing a product from this offer will automatically receive the tags you entered.

Customize Tags
You can change the tags on an offer at any time.
- Go to Preorders > Offers and click the offer.
- Click on Customize button
- Click on the Limits & rules section.
- Update the Order tags field with your new tags.
- Click Save.
Remove Tags from an Offer
To stop tagging future orders for a specific offer, clear the tags field.
- Go to Preorders > Offers and click the offer.
- Scroll to the Limits & rules section.
- Clear the Order tags field so it is empty.
- Click Save.

New orders for this offer will no longer receive any tags from STOQ. Previously tagged orders are not affected their existing tags remain in Shopify.
How Tags Appear in Shopify Admin
Once STOQ tags an order, you can see the tags directly in Shopify admin.
On the order detail page
- In your Shopify admin, go to Orders and click on a preorder order.
- In the Tags section on the right-hand side of the order page, you will see the tags that STOQ applied (e.g.,
preorder,ship-later).

On the orders list page
- In your Shopify admin, go to Orders.
- Tags appear as small labels beneath each order in the list view.
- You can filter the orders list by tag — click Filter, select Tagged with, and enter your tag name to show only orders with that tag.

Use Cases for Preorder Order Tags
Here are common ways merchants use order tags for preorders.
- Filter orders in Shopify admin — use the tag to quickly find all preorder orders by searching or filtering by tag on the Orders page.
- Automate workflows with Shopify Flow — trigger automations based on order tags (e.g., send a notification to your warehouse when an order is tagged
preorder). - Separate fulfillment workflows — use different tags for different offers to route orders to the right fulfillment process (e.g.,
ship-latervsready-to-ship). - Reporting and analytics — export orders filtered by tag to analyze preorder revenue or volume per offer.
Troubleshooting
If you run into issues, use this table to find a fix.
Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
Tags not appearing on new orders | Make sure you saved the offer after entering tags. Only orders placed after saving receive the tags. |
Old orders missing the new tag | Tag changes only apply to new orders. To tag existing orders, edit them manually in Shopify admin or use a bulk action. |
Multiple tags not working | Separate tags with commas and no spaces after the comma (e.g., |
Tags from a different offer showing up | Each offer has its own tags. Check that the correct offer is configured. If an order contains products from multiple offers, it receives tags from all applicable offers. |
FAQs
Q: Can I add different tags to different preorder offers?
A: Yes. Each preorder offer has its own Order tags field. You can configure unique tags for each offer so orders are tagged based on which offer the customer purchased from.
Q: Do tags apply to orders that contain both preorder and regular products?
A: Yes. If an order includes at least one product linked to a preorder offer with tags configured, STOQ applies the tags to the entire order.
Q: Can I use these tags with Shopify Flow?
A: Yes. Shopify Flow can trigger automations based on order tags. For example, you can create a Flow that sends an internal notification or updates a spreadsheet whenever an order with the tag preorder is created.
Q: Will removing a tag from the offer remove it from existing orders?
A: No. Clearing the Order tags field only stops STOQ from tagging future orders. Tags already applied to existing orders remain in Shopify. To remove tags from past orders, edit them directly in Shopify admin.
Q: Is there a limit to how many tags I can add per offer?
A: STOQ does not impose a limit on the number of tags per offer. However, Shopify has its own limits on order tags — each tag can be up to 40 characters, and an order can have up to 250 tags total.
