How to reset translations for a specific language in STOQ

If you have customized translations for a particular language and want to start fresh, STOQ lets you reset translations back to the built-in defaults. This is useful when your translated text has become outdated, contains errors, or you simply want to return to STOQ's standard wording for a specific language. The reset applies to notification templates, storefront button and popup text, and SMS body — all at once for the language you choose.

What resetting translations does

When you reset translations for a language, STOQ overwrites every translatable field for that language with the built-in default text. This covers two areas:

  • Notification templates — email subject, pre-header, header, description, footer, button text, unsubscribe text, and SMS body for each notification step (automatic alert, reminder, and preorder templates).
  • Storefront text — the "Notify me" button label, signup popup header, description, form placeholders, error messages, success message, and opt-in email text.

The reset pulls default strings from STOQ's translation library for the selected language. Your default-language template is not affected — only the specific translation language you choose gets overwritten.

Warning: Resetting translations is immediate and cannot be undone. If you have custom text you want to keep, copy it somewhere safe before resetting.

Prerequisites

Before you can reset translations, confirm the following:

  • STOQ is installed and active on your Shopify store.
  • You are on a paid STOQ plan. Multi-language features are not available on the free plan.
  • Multi-language support is enabled. Go to Settings > Languages and verify the Multi-language support toggle is on.
  • The language you want to reset is published in your Shopify store under Shopify Admin > Settings > Languages.
  • STOQ has built-in defaults for the language. The Reset all link and Use defaults banner only appear for languages that STOQ supports with pre-built translations.

Step 1 — Open the notification template translator

Navigate to the template translation editor where the reset option lives.

From the Settings page

  1. Open STOQ and go to Settings > Languages.
  2. Under the Multi-language section, find Notification templates.
  3. Click Edit translations.

From the Notifications tab

  1. Go to Back in Stock > Notifications > Email template.
  2. Open the template you want to work with.
  3. Click the language or translation link to open the translator.

Both paths take you to the Languages for notifications page.

Step 2 — Select the language to reset

Once you are on the Languages for notifications page, pick the language whose translations you want to restore to defaults.

  1. Use the Select a language dropdown to choose the language you want to reset (for example, French, German, or Spanish).
  2. The page loads your current translations for that language. Each field shows the default-language text on the left and your translation on the right.

Tip: If a field displays "No translation set — using default" as help text, that field is already showing the default-language fallback and has no custom translation saved.

The Reset all link at the bottom of the page restores every field for the selected language to STOQ's built-in defaults in one click.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the Languages for notifications page.
  2. Click the Reset all link on the left side of the footer bar (next to the Save changes button).
  3. STOQ replaces all notification template fields for the selected language with the built-in default translations.
  4. Review the restored text in each field to make sure it looks correct.
  5. Click Save changes to confirm.

Note: The Reset all link only appears when STOQ has built-in defaults available for the selected language. If you do not see it, that language may not have default translations in STOQ's library.

Alternative — Use the defaults banner

When you switch to a language that has built-in defaults available, STOQ shows an info banner at the top of the translation form.

  1. Select a language from the Select a language dropdown.
  2. If defaults exist, a blue banner appears: "Defaults are available for this language."
  3. Click Use defaults in the banner.
  4. STOQ fills every notification template field with the default translations for that language.
  5. Review the fields, make any adjustments you need, and click Save changes.

You can dismiss the banner by clicking the X icon. It reappears the next time you switch to a language with defaults.

Step 4 — Repeat for each notification template

Each notification step has its own template. If you want to reset translations for all of them, you need to repeat the process for each one.

  1. Use the Select a notification dropdown to switch to the next notification template (for example, from Back In Stock - Notification to Back In Stock - Reminder Notification 1).
  2. Click Reset all or Use defaults again for the same language.
  3. Click Save changes.
  4. Repeat for any remaining notification templates, including preorder templates if applicable.

Tip: If you use preorder notifications, also switch the Select notification type dropdown to reset the Shipping update and Payment collection failed sub-types separately.

Known limitations

  • Reset overwrites all custom translations immediately. There is no undo or confirmation dialog. Copy any custom text before resetting.
  • Only languages with built-in STOQ defaults show the Reset all link. If your language is not in STOQ's translation library, you cannot reset to defaults — you must enter translations manually.
  • Each notification template must be reset separately. Resetting the automatic alert does not reset the reminder or preorder templates.
  • Preorder sub-types must be reset individually. Shipping update and payment collection failed templates each require a separate reset.
  • Custom HTML email templates are not reset. If you use a custom HTML template, the reset only affects the standard text fields — your custom HTML stays as-is.
  • The default language is never reset. The reset only applies to translation languages, not to the store's primary default language.

Troubleshooting

Symptom

Likely cause

Fix

Reset all link is not visible

The selected language does not have built-in defaults in STOQ

Switch to a supported language, or enter translations manually

Use defaults banner does not appear

The banner was dismissed earlier, or the language has no defaults

Switch to a different language and back, or use the Reset all link at the bottom instead

Fields still show old translations after reset

Changes were not saved

Click Save changes after resetting

Only one notification template was reset

Each template is independent

Switch to the next notification in the Select a notification dropdown and reset it separately

Storefront button text was not reset

Storefront text and notification templates are on different pages

Go to Settings > Languages > Edit translations for the storefront translator to reset button and popup text

Reset did not affect preorder shipping update template

Preorder sub-types need individual resets

Use the Select notification type dropdown to switch to Shipping update and reset again

Multi-language fields are greyed out

Multi-language support is disabled

Enable Multi-language support under Settings > Languages

Translation shows "Translation missing" after reset

STOQ does not have a default string for that specific field and language

Enter the translation manually in the text field

FAQs

Q : Does resetting translations delete my custom text permanently?

A : Yes. When you click Reset all or Use defaults, STOQ overwrites the stored translation for every field with the built-in default. There is no way to recover the previous custom text. Always copy your translations to a safe place before resetting.

Q : Can I reset just one field instead of all fields?

A : No. The Reset all and Use defaults options reset every translatable field at once for the selected language and notification template. To change a single field, edit it manually and click Save changes.

Q : Does resetting affect my default-language template?

A : No. The reset only applies to the translation language you selected in the Select a language dropdown. Your store's default-language template stays exactly as it is.

Q : Which languages have built-in defaults in STOQ?

A : STOQ includes built-in defaults for many common languages. If a language has defaults, you will see the blue "Defaults are available for this language" banner and the Reset all link. If neither appears, that language is not in STOQ's translation library yet.

Q : Do I need to reset the automatic alert and reminder separately?

A : Yes. Each notification step (automatic alert at position 0, reminder at position 1) has its own template. Use the Select a notification dropdown to switch between them and reset each one individually.

Q : Will resetting translations also reset the storefront button and popup text?

A : No. The notification template translator and the storefront translator are separate pages. Resetting on the Languages for notifications page only affects notification templates. To reset storefront text (button, popup, form messages), use the storefront translator under Settings > Languages.

Q : What happens to translations if I disable and re-enable multi-language support?

A : Disabling multi-language support stops STOQ from using translations, but your saved translations are preserved. When you re-enable multi-language support, STOQ also automatically loads defaults for any languages that do not already have translations saved.

Q : Can I reset translations for all languages at once?

A : Not directly from the translator page. The Reset all link resets one language at a time. However, when you first enable multi-language support, STOQ automatically loads default translations for all published languages that have built-in defaults. To re-trigger this for all languages, you can disable and re-enable the Multi-language support toggle under Settings > Languages.
