How to Fix "Product Deleted or Variant Unavailable" Error

The "Product deleted or variant unavailable" error appears in STOQ Reports when a product or variant has been removed from your Shopify store or is no longer accessible. This guide explains why the error occurs and how to fix it so you can continue sending back-in-stock notifications to waiting customers. The most common fix is to transfer (move) the pending signups to another active product or variant.

Before You Begin

Make sure the following requirements are met before troubleshooting:

  • STOQ is installed and enabled on your Shopify store with the app embed turned on.
  • You have access to the Reports section in STOQ. Navigate to Reports from the left-hand menu.
  • You know which product was deleted or changed. Check your Shopify admin to confirm whether the product or variant still exists.

Tip: If you recently changed variants on a product (for example, renamed sizes or removed a color option), the old variant IDs may no longer match. STOQ treats these as deleted variants.

What Causes This Error

This error appears when STOQ cannot find the original product or variant that customers signed up for. Common causes include:

  • You deleted a product from your Shopify admin. All signups linked to that product now reference a product ID that no longer exists.
  • You deleted or removed a variant (for example, removed a size or color option). The variant ID is no longer valid even though the parent product may still exist.
  • You recreated a product with new variants. Even if the product title is the same, Shopify assigns new IDs when you recreate a product or its variants.
  • You duplicated a product and deleted the original. The duplicate has different IDs, so signups from the original product become orphaned.

How the Error Appears in STOQ

The error shows up in several places within STOQ Reports. Understanding where it appears helps you locate and fix affected signups.

In the Products Tab

  1. Go to Reports and click the Products tab.
  2. Products whose data is no longer available in Shopify appear in italics as "Product unavailable" with an asterisk (*).
  3. Products where the variant was deleted but the product still exists show the product name with a plus sign (+) and a "Product deleted" tooltip on hover.

In the Variants Tab

  1. Go to Reports, click the Products tab, then switch the group view to Variants.
  2. Variants that are no longer available appear in italics as "Variant unavailable" with an asterisk (*).
  3. Variants where the product still exists but the specific variant was removed show the product name with a plus sign (+) and a "Product deleted" tooltip.

In the Current Waitlist Tab

  1. Go to Reports and look at the Current waitlist tab.
  2. Rows linked to a deleted product show "Deleted product" in the product column with a caution tone.
  3. Rows linked to a deleted variant show "Deleted variant" in the product column.
  4. The Send button is disabled for these rows -- you cannot send notifications for deleted products or variants.
  5. The SKU column shows "n/a" for deleted items.

On a Product or Variant Notification Page

  1. Click on a deleted product or variant from the Products tab.
  2. The page title shows "Deleted product" or "Deleted variant".
  3. A red critical banner appears with the message: "Variant deleted -- Back in stock alerts cannot be sent for this variant because it was deleted from Shopify admin recently. To send alerts, move the requests waiting for an alert to another product or variant."
  4. The banner provides a Move requests button and a Contact support button.
  5. All send-related buttons (Send notifications, date filter, channel dropdown) are disabled.

How to Fix the Error by Transferring Signups

The primary fix is to transfer (move) pending signups from the deleted product or variant to an active one. After the transfer, you can send notifications for the new product.

Step 1 -- Open the Deleted Product or Variant Page

  1. Go to Reports in the STOQ navigation menu.
  2. Click the Products tab.
  3. Click on the affected product or variant (shown as "Product unavailable", "Variant unavailable", or with a + indicator).
  4. You will see the "Variant deleted" banner with the Move requests button.

Step 2 -- Start the Transfer

You can start the transfer in two ways:

  • From the banner: Click the Move requests button directly in the red banner.
  • From the More menu: Click More in the page header, then select Transfer signups. A modal opens explaining the transfer process. Click Select product to continue.

Step 3 -- Select the Destination Product

  1. A Shopify product picker opens.
  2. Search for and select the product you want to move the signups to.
  3. Important: You must select a product with only one variant, or select exactly one variant of a multi-variant product. If you select a product with multiple variants without choosing one, STOQ shows the error: "Signups cannot be moved to multiple variants of a product. Please select one variant to move them to."
  4. Click Select to confirm.

Step 4 -- Confirm the Transfer

  1. STOQ processes the transfer. For small numbers of signups, you see a "Requests moved" toast message. For large numbers (over 500 signups), the transfer runs in the background and you see "Moving in background".
  2. You are automatically redirected to the new product's notification page.
  3. The transferred signups now appear under the new product's Current waitlist tab.
  4. You can now send notifications for the new product as usual.

Note: Only signups in the Current waitlist (pending notifications) are transferred. Customers who have already been notified are not moved.

How to Hide Deleted Products from Reports

If you do not need to transfer the signups and simply want to clean up your Reports view, you can hide deleted products and variants.

Step 1 -- Open Report Settings

  1. In STOQ, go to Reports.
  2. Click the Settings icon (gear) at the top of the Reports page to open the Report Settings page.

Step 2 -- Enable the Hide Option

  1. Under the Other section, check the box labeled "Hide deleted products & variants from Reports".
  2. Click Save.

What This Does

  • Deleted products and variants are filtered out of the Products tab, Variants tab, and the Current waitlist.
  • The signups still exist in STOQ's database but are no longer visible in Reports.
  • This setting does not delete the signups. You can uncheck the option later to see them again.

Tip: This is useful for keeping your Reports clean after you have already transferred the signups you need or if the signups are no longer relevant.

Advanced Tips

These tips help you manage deleted products and variants more effectively.

  • Act quickly after deleting a product. Transfer signups as soon as possible so customers can still receive notifications while the product is fresh in their minds.
  • Use transfer when relisting a product. If you deleted a product and recreated it with a new listing, transfer the old signups to the new listing so customers are notified when it restocks.
  • Check variant changes carefully. Modifying variant options (adding or removing sizes, colors, etc.) can cause existing variant IDs to become invalid. If you need to restructure variants, transfer signups first.
  • Large transfers run in the background. Transfers of more than 500 signups are processed in the background. You will be redirected to the new product page, but the signups may take a moment to appear.
  • Only current waitlist signups are moved. Previously notified customers stay linked to the original (deleted) product. This is by design -- only pending signups are transferred.

Known Limitations

Be aware of the following limitations when dealing with deleted products or variants.

  • You cannot send notifications for deleted products or variants. The Send button is disabled for any signup linked to a deleted item. You must transfer the signups to an active product first.
  • Transfer requires selecting exactly one variant. You cannot move signups to multiple variants at once. If the destination product has multiple variants, you must pick one.
  • Previously notified customers are not transferred. Only signups in the Current waitlist are moved. Notifications already sent remain linked to the original product.
  • Hiding deleted products does not delete the signups. The "Hide deleted products & variants from Reports" setting only filters the view. Signups remain in the system.
  • Variant changes in Shopify are irreversible for STOQ. Once Shopify assigns a new variant ID (due to variant restructuring), the old ID cannot be recovered. STOQ will treat the old variant as deleted.

FAQs

Q: What does "Product deleted or variant unavailable" mean?

A: It means the product or variant that customers signed up for is no longer available in your Shopify store. This typically happens when you delete a product, remove a variant, or restructure the variant options on a product. STOQ can no longer match the signup to a live product.

Q: Can I still send notifications for a deleted product?

A: No. The Send button is disabled for signups linked to deleted products or variants. You must first transfer the signups to an active product using the Move requests feature. After the transfer, you can send notifications from the new product's page.

Q: Will transferring signups notify the customers automatically?

A: No. Transferring signups only moves the pending requests to the new product. You still need to manually send notifications or wait for the product to restock for automatic alerts to trigger.

Q: What happens to already-notified customers when I transfer?

A: Only pending signups (in the Current waitlist) are transferred. Customers who have already been notified remain linked to the original product and are not moved.

Q: I changed the variants on my product but did not delete it. Why does STOQ show "Variant unavailable"?

A: When you modify variant options in Shopify (for example, changing from S/M/L to XS/S/M/L/XL), Shopify may assign new variant IDs. The old variant IDs that customers signed up for no longer exist, so STOQ shows them as unavailable. Transfer the signups to the correct new variant to fix this.

Q: Can I transfer signups to a product in a different collection?

A: Yes. The product picker lets you select any active product in your store, regardless of which collection it belongs to. The destination product just needs to be published and have at least one variant.

Q: Does hiding deleted products from Reports delete the signup data?

A: No. The "Hide deleted products & variants from Reports" setting only filters your view. All signup data remains in STOQ's database. You can uncheck the setting at any time to see deleted products again.

Q: How do I prevent this error from happening?

A: Avoid deleting products that have active back-in-stock signups. If you need to delist a product temporarily, consider setting it to draft instead of deleting it. If you must delete and recreate a product, transfer the signups before deleting the original.
