How to change "From" address for STOQ email notifications

Using your own custom email address for sending back in stock notifications or confirmation emails helps improve email deliverability and brand recognition for your Shopify store. This feature allows you to send customer notifications from your business email address instead of the default Stoq address, creating a more professional experience for your customers.

How to Change the From Address

Follow these steps to set up your custom from address for email alerts.

Step 1 — Open the Email Template Editor

  1. In STOQ, click 'Back in stock alerts' in the sidebar menu.
  2. Go to the 'Notifications' section.
  3. Click 'Customize email' under 'Email & SMS templates' to open the email editor.

Step 2 — Open the Address Settings

  1. In the email editor, click Address in the sidebar or drawer menu.
  2. The Address panel opens, showing the From name field and the Email address options.

Step 3 — Set Your From Name

  1. In the From name field, enter the name customers will see as the sender (e.g., your store name).
  2. This name appears in the "From" field of the email alongside your email address.

Step 4 — Select "Use Your Own Email"

  1. Under Email address, you see two options:

Default address — Uses STOQ's default email (e.g., restock@yourstore.stoqapp.com).

Use your own email — Lets you enter your custom domain email address.

  1. Select Use your own email.

In the From address field that appears, enter your custom email address (e.g., hello@yourstore.com).

Step 5 — Save Your Changes

  1. Click Save changes on the top right of the editor
  2. After saving, STOQ displays a "DKIM authentication required" banner. This is expected — you need to complete DKIM setup before emails can be sent from your address.

Understanding Email Domain Requirements

Your custom email address must meet specific requirements to be eligible for sending:

  • Must use a custom domain (e.g., yourstore.com, yourbusiness.co)
  • Cannot use platform-based email providers like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook, iCloud, or similar services
  • Must be a valid email format with proper domain structure
  • Domain must be capable of receiving verification emails

DKIM Authentication Setup

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) authentication is required for custom domain emails to ensure proper delivery to Gmail, Yahoo, and other major email providers.

Understanding DKIM Requirements

DKIM is an email authentication method that uses a digital signature to let email receivers know that the message was sent and authorized by the owner of a domain. Starting February 1, 2024, Google and Yahoo Mail require DKIM authentication for bulk email senders.

Downloading DKIM Records

  1. After you enter your email address and save changes, you will see a banner stating "DKIM authentication required"
  2. Click the Download records button to generate your DNS records
  3. The system will create a CSV file containing three CNAME records specific to your domain
  4. Save this CSV file as you'll need it for the next steps

Understanding DKIM Record Format

The DKIM records will be in the following format:

Name

Type

Value

xxxxxxxx._domainkey.yourdomain.com

CNAME

xxxxxxxx.dkim.amazonses.com

yyyyyyyy._domainkey.yourdomain.com

CNAME

yyyyyyyy.dkim.amazonses.com

zzzzzzzz._domainkey.yourdomain.com

CNAME

zzzzzzzz.dkim.amazonses.com

Adding DKIM Records to Your DNS

After downloading the CNAME records, you need to add them to your domain's DNS settings:

  1. Go to your domain's DNS management interface
  2. Add a new record to your DNS settings, selecting CNAME as the record type
  3. Copy the contents of the Name column from the CSV (e.g., myc2hajp4qreukhgkr6fvoidt6ilnd47._domainkey.yourdomain.com)
  4. Paste the copied contents into the Label or Host field in your DNS settings
  5. Copy the contents of the Value column (e.g., myc2hajp4qreukhgkr6fvoidt6ilnd47.dkim.amazonses.com)
  6. Paste the copied contents into the Destination or Target field in your DNS settings
  7. Save the record and repeat for all three CNAME records
  8. CNAME record changes can take up to 72 hours to take effect, but typically happen much sooner

Provider-Specific DNS Setup Instructions

Different domain providers have varying interfaces for adding DNS records:

Google Domains: When entering records into the Name column, it's not necessary to include "yourdomain.com". Enter only: xxxxxxxx._domainkey

Namecheap: When entering records into the Name column, it's not necessary to include "yourdomain.com". Enter only: xxxxxxxx._domainkey

Shopify: When entering records into the Name column, it's not necessary to include "yourdomain.com". Enter only: xxxxxxxx._domainkey

Squarespace: When entering records into the Name column, it's not necessary to include "yourdomain.com". Enter only: xxxxxxxx._domainkey

Verifying DKIM Setup

  1. After adding all three CNAME records to your DNS, wait for the changes to propagate (usually 15 minutes to 2 hours)
  2. Return to your Stoq email settings page and refresh the browser
  3. The system will automatically detect when DKIM authentication is complete
  4. Once both email verification and DKIM authentication are successful, emails will be sent from your custom address

Advanced Tips

Here are some advanced techniques for managing your custom email address setup:

  • Always add all three CNAME records provided in the CSV file - partial setup will not work
  • Use your domain registrar's DNS management interface rather than third-party DNS services when possible
  • Test your DNS changes using online CNAME lookup tools to verify they're properly configured
  • Keep a backup of your DKIM records CSV file in case you need to reconfigure later
  • Monitor your email deliverability after setup to ensure messages are reaching customers
