How to Use STOQ with Shopify Combined Listings

Shopify Combined Listings is a Shopify Plus feature that lets you group multiple products into a single product page. For example, you can display different colors of the same item as variant options on one unified listing, where each "child" product keeps its own title, images, description, and URL. STOQ supports Combined Listings so your Preorder and Notify Me buttons update automatically when a customer switches between child products on a combined listing page.

What Are Combined Listings?

Combined Listings let Shopify Plus merchants create a single product page that groups multiple standalone products together. This section explains how they work and why they need special handling in STOQ.

How Combined Listings Work in Shopify

In a standard Shopify product, all variants belong to the same product. With Combined Listings, each option (e.g., a specific color) is actually a separate product with its own inventory, variants, images, and URL. Shopify groups these "child" products under a single "parent" listing so they appear as one product page to customers.

For example, a T-shirt combined listing might have:

  • Red T-shirt — a standalone product with sizes S, M, L, XL
  • Blue T-shirt — a separate product with sizes S, M, L, XL
  • Green T-shirt — a separate product with sizes S, M, L, XL

All three appear on one product page. When a customer selects "Blue," Shopify switches to the Blue T-shirt product in the background.

Why STOQ Needs Special Handling for Combined Listings

Because each child in a combined listing is a separate product, STOQ needs to fetch fresh product and inventory data every time a customer switches between children. Without the Combined Listings integration, STOQ would only know about the first product loaded on the page and would not update the Preorder or Notify Me button when the customer selects a different child product.

Once the integration is enabled, STOQ automatically:

  • Detects when a customer switches to a different child product
  • Fetches the new product's inventory and preorder data
  • Updates the Preorder or Notify Me button to match the selected child product and variant

Requirements

Before setting up Combined Listings support in STOQ, make sure you meet these requirements.

  • Shopify Plus plan — Combined Listings is a Shopify Plus feature. It is not available on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced plans.
  • Online Store 2.0 theme — STOQ requires an Online Store 2.0 theme. Online Store 1.0 themes are not supported because they do not support app embeds.
  • Combined Listings already set up in Shopify — Your products must already be grouped using Shopify's Combined Listings feature before enabling the integration in STOQ.

How to Set Up Combined Listings Support in STOQ

The Combined Listings integration needs to be configured by the STOQ support team. Here is how to request setup.

  1. In the STOQ app, go to Preorders or Back in stock alerts.
  2. Click the Settings tab (for Preorders) or the Integrations tab (for Back in stock alerts) and scroll to Integrations.
  3. Find Combined Listings and click Set up.
  4. Click the Contact support button. This opens a chat message pre-filled with: "Hi! I'd like to set up Combined Listings support for my store."
  5. The STOQ support team will configure the integration for your store. No changes to your theme or products are needed on your end.

Note: The setup is a one-time configuration. Once enabled, the integration works automatically on all your combined listing product pages.

What Happens After Setup

Once the STOQ support team enables the Combined Listings integration, STOQ handles everything automatically on your storefront. Here is what to expect.

Automatic Button Updates

When a customer visits a combined listing product page and switches between child products (for example, selecting a different color), STOQ automatically:

  1. Detects the product change
  2. Fetches the new child product's inventory and preorder status
  3. Shows or hides the Preorder or Notify Me button based on the selected child product's availability

For example, if the Red T-shirt is available for preorder but the Blue T-shirt is in stock, STOQ will show the Preorder button when "Red" is selected and hide it when "Blue" is selected.

Works with Both Preorders and Back in Stock Alerts

The Combined Listings integration works for both STOQ features:

  • Preorders — Shows or hides the Preorder button based on whether the selected child product is part of a preorder offer
  • Back in stock alerts — Shows or hides the Notify Me button based on whether the selected child product is out of stock

High-Variant Product Support

If your combined listing child products have a large number of variants (more than 250), STOQ automatically fetches the additional variant data in the background. You do not need to do anything extra for high-variant products.

Known Limitations

  • Shopify Plus only — Combined Listings is exclusively a Shopify Plus feature. Merchants on other plans cannot use this integration.
  • Support team setup required — The integration must be configured by the STOQ support team. It cannot be self-enabled from the STOQ app.
  • Online Store 2.0 required — STOQ does not support Online Store 1.0 themes. Your store must use a 2.0 theme for the app embed to work.
  • Brief loading moment on product switch — When a customer switches between child products, there is a brief moment (approximately 300 milliseconds) while STOQ fetches the new product data. During this time, the button may briefly disappear before updating.
  • Child products must be configured separately — Each child product in a combined listing is a standalone Shopify product. If you want to offer preorders, you need to add each child product to your preorder offer individually.
