How to show and customize the discounted price for preorders on product pages

Learn how to display discounted preorder prices on product pages in STOQ, showing customers the original and sale price side by side.

Overview

When you offer a discount on preorder products, STOQ can display the discounted price alongside the original price on your product pages. This helps customers immediately see their savings, making the preorder offer more attractive. The discounted price appears with the original price crossed out, clearly showing the value of the preorder discount.

How Discounted Price Display Works

When enabled, the discounted price feature shows two prices on the product page:

  • Original price: Displayed with a strikethrough (crossed out)
  • Discounted price: Displayed as the new, lower price customers will pay

This visual presentation helps customers understand the value of preordering and can increase conversion rates by highlighting the savings.

When This Option Appears

The "Show discounted price" option only appears in your offer settings when you have configured a discount. This includes:

  • Percentage discount: A percentage off the regular price (e.g., 10% off)
  • Fixed amount discount: A specific dollar amount off (e.g., $5 off)

If your preorder offer has no discount configured (pricing type is set to "No discount"), the discounted price option will not appear since there's no discounted price to display.

Enabling Discounted Price Display

Follow these steps to show the discounted price on your product pages.

Step 1: Access Your Preorder Offer

  1. From your Shopify admin, open the STOQ app.
  2. Click Preorders in the left navigation menu.
  3. Click Offers to view your preorder offers.
  4. Click on the offer you want to configure.

Step 2: Configure a Discount

Before you can show the discounted price, you need to have a discount configured:

  1. In the offer editor, find the **Payment **section.
  2. Under pricing options, select either:

   - Percentage discount: Enter the percentage off (e.g., 10 for 10% off)

   - Fixed amount discount: Enter the dollar amount off (e.g., 5 for $5 off)

Note: If you select "No discount," the discounted price option will not appear since there's no discount to display.

Step 3: Enable Show Discounted Price

Once a discount is configured:

  1. In the Payment section, look for the Show discounted price checkbox.
  2. Check the box to enable the discounted price display.
  3. The preview on the right side of the screen updates to show how the prices will appear.

Step 4: Save Your Changes

  1. Click Save to apply your changes.
  2. Visit your product page to verify the discounted price displays correctly.

How the Discounted Price Appears

When enabled, customers see the pricing displayed in a clear, easy-to-understand format.

On Product Pages

The product page shows:

  • The original price with a strikethrough in a muted color
  • The discounted price displayed prominently next to it

This format immediately communicates the savings to customers.

In Cart

When customers add a preorder product to their cart, the discounted price is reflected in the cart total. The cart shows the discounted price as the line item price.

Discount Types and Display

The discounted price display works with different discount configurations.

Percentage Discount

When you set a percentage discount:

  • STOQ calculates the discounted price based on the product's regular price.
  • The percentage is applied to each product variant's price.
  • Example: 10% off a $50 product shows as $45.00

Fixed Amount Discount

When you set a fixed amount discount:

  • STOQ subtracts the fixed amount from the product's regular price.
  • The same amount is deducted from each variant.
  • Example: $5 off a $50 product shows as $45.00

Full and Partial Payment Options

If your offer uses the "Full and Partial" payment option (allowing customers to choose between paying in full or making a deposit):

  • Each payment option can have its own discount settings.
  • The discounted price display reflects the currently selected payment option.
  • Customers see the appropriate discounted price based on their payment choice.

Best Practices

Follow these recommendations for effective use of discounted price display.

Make Discounts Meaningful

  • Offer discounts that provide real value to customers.
  • Consider your margins when setting discount amounts.
  • Test different discount levels to find what converts best.

Use Clear Pricing

  • Ensure your regular prices are set correctly in Shopify.
  • The discounted price is calculated from the product's current price.
  • Price changes in Shopify automatically update the discounted display.

Combine with Other Elements

  • Use the discounted price display alongside the payment widget for maximum impact.
  • Consider enabling fulfillment timeline information to set expectations.
  • Add preorder badges to make preorder products stand out.

Test Before Launch

  • Preview your offer in the STOQ editor to see how prices display.
  • Visit your product page to verify the display looks correct.
  • Test with different products at various price points.

Known Limitations

The discounted price display has some constraints to be aware of.

  • The option only appears when a discount (percentage or fixed amount) is configured. No discount means no discounted price option.
  • Discounted prices are calculated from the product's current Shopify price. If you change prices in Shopify, the discounted price updates automatically.
  • The display styling (colors, fonts) follows your theme's default price styling. STOQ doesn't provide separate customization for the discounted price appearance.
  • For scheduled offers that haven't started yet (before launch), the discounted price may not display until the offer becomes active.
  • The strikethrough styling on the original price uses standard CSS. Some themes may override this styling.

FAQs

Here are answers to common questions about showing discounted prices for preorders.

Q : Can I customize the appearance of the discounted price?

A : The discounted price display uses your theme's default styling for prices. The original price appears with a strikethrough in a muted color, and the discounted price uses your theme's standard price styling. For custom styling, you may need to add CSS to your theme.

Q : Does the discounted price show in the cart and checkout?

A : Yes, when customers add a preorder product to their cart, the discounted price is reflected throughout the purchase flow. The cart and checkout show the discounted price as the product price.

Q : What happens if I change the discount amount?

A : When you change the discount percentage or amount in your offer settings and save, the discounted price updates automatically on your product pages. Customers will see the new discounted price immediately.

Q : Can I show discounted prices for some products but not others?

A : The discounted price display is an offer-level setting. All products in an offer with a discount will show the discounted price when enabled. To have different display settings, create separate offers for different product groups.

Q : Why is my discounted price not showing even though I enabled it?

A : First, verify that you have a discount configured (percentage or fixed amount). If pricing is set to "No discount," there's no discounted price to display. Also ensure you've saved your changes and refreshed your product page.

Q : Does this work with Shopify's compare-at price?

A : The STOQ discounted price display is separate from Shopify's compare-at price feature. STOQ calculates the discounted price based on your offer's discount settings, not Shopify's compare-at price. Both can be used together, but they operate independently.
