How to Unsubscribe customers from STOQ back in stock alerts
STOQ allows merchants to unsubscribe customers from back-in-stock alerts directly from the dashboard. When a customer is unsubscribed, they stop receiving all pending restock notifications for products they previously signed up for. You can unsubscribe a customer globally from the Customers tab in Reports, or unsubscribe individual alert requests from a product's waitlist page. If an unsubscribed customer signs up for a new product after being unsubscribed, they will receive notifications for that new product only.
Why Unsubscribe Customers from Alerts
There are several reasons you may need to unsubscribe a customer from back-in-stock alerts.
- Customer request. A customer contacts you asking to stop receiving restock notifications. Unsubscribing them from the dashboard is the fastest way to honour their request.
- Invalid or outdated contact information. If a customer's email address or phone number is no longer valid, unsubscribing them prevents failed delivery attempts and keeps your notification metrics accurate.
- Reduce unwanted notifications. Some customers may have signed up for alerts on products that are permanently discontinued. Unsubscribing them avoids sending notifications for products that will never be restocked.
- GDPR and privacy compliance. If a customer requests data removal or opts out of marketing communications, unsubscribing them from alerts helps you stay compliant with privacy regulations.
- Clean up your waitlist. Removing inactive or unresponsive customers from alert lists keeps your waitlist data meaningful and your notification counts accurate.
How to Unsubscribe a Customer from All Alerts
Follow these steps to unsubscribe a customer so they stop receiving all back-in-stock notifications.
- Open the STOQ app in your Shopify admin.
- Go to Reports in the left menu.
- Switch to the Customers tab.
- Find the customer you want to unsubscribe and click on their name to open their detail page.
- Click More in the top right corner of the page.
- Click Unsubscribe from alerts.
- A confirmation modal appears asking: "Are you sure you want to unsubscribe this customer? They will no longer receive any back in stock alerts & reminders on products they signed up for."
- Click Unsubscribe to confirm.

A toast message confirms "Customer unsubscribed successfully". The customer's status badge changes from Subscribed to Unsubscribed (shown in yellow).
How to Resubscribe a Customer
If a customer was previously unsubscribed and you need to restore their alerts, you can resubscribe them from the same page.
- Go to Reports > Customers tab.
- Click on the unsubscribed customer's name.
- Click More in the top right corner.
- Click Subscribe to alerts.
- A confirmation modal appears asking: "Are you sure you want to subscribe this customer? They will start receiving back in stock alerts & reminders on products they signed up for."
- Click Subscribe to confirm.
The customer's status changes back to Subscribed and they will receive notifications for any products they previously signed up for when those products are restocked.

How to Unsubscribe Individual Requests from a Product Waitlist
You can also unsubscribe specific alert requests from a product's waitlist page without affecting the customer's other signups.
- Go to Reports in the left menu.
- In the Products in demand tab, click on a product to open its waitlist.
- On the Current waitlist tab, find the customer's request in the table.
- Select the request using the checkbox.
- The selected request is unsubscribed from notifications for that specific product.
This only removes the customer from the waitlist for that particular product or variant. Their other alert signups remain active.

How to Delete a Customer Entirely
If you need to remove a customer and all their associated data from STOQ, you can delete them from the customer detail page.
- Go to Reports > Customers tab.
- Click on the customer's name.
- Click More in the top right corner.
- Click Delete customer.
- A confirmation modal appears warning that this will delete any preorders, requests, notifications, and analytics linked to the customer.
- Click Delete to confirm.
The customer and all their data are permanently removed. You are redirected back to the Customers tab.

Known Limitations
Keep these points in mind when unsubscribing customers.
- Unsubscribing a customer is a global action that affects all their pending alert requests across all products. There is no option to unsubscribe from a single product from the customer detail page.
- Unsubscribing does not delete the customer's signup data. Their requests remain visible in the waitlist with an "Unsubscribed" badge.
- If a customer unsubscribes themselves via an unsubscribe link in an email, their status updates automatically in STOQ.
- Resubscribing a customer restores all their pending requests. If products were restocked and alerts were already sent to other customers while the customer was unsubscribed, they will not retroactively receive those alerts.
- Deleting a customer is permanent and removes all associated data including preorders, requests, notifications, and analytics.
- The Customers tab in Reports shows both subscribed and unsubscribed customers. Use the status badge to identify unsubscribed customers.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
Cannot find the customer in the Customers tab | Use the search functionality in the Customers tab to search by name, email, or phone number. Check that you are looking in the correct tab under Reports. |
"Unsubscribe from alerts" option not visible | Click the More button in the top right corner of the customer detail page. The unsubscribe option appears in the dropdown menu. |
Customer still receiving notifications after unsubscribing | The unsubscribe applies to future notifications only. If a notification was already queued or in progress before the unsubscribe, it may still be delivered. Wait a few minutes and check again. |
Customer was unsubscribed by mistake | Go to the customer's detail page, click More, and select Subscribe to alerts to restore their subscription. |
Customer's status badge not updating | Refresh the page after performing the unsubscribe action. The badge should change from "Subscribed" to "Unsubscribed". |
Want to unsubscribe from one product only | Use the product's waitlist page instead of the customer page. Navigate to the product in Reports > Products in demand, find the request, and remove it from the waitlist. |
FAQs
Q: What happens to existing signups when I unsubscribe a customer?
A: The customer's existing signups remain in the waitlist but are marked as unsubscribed. They will not receive notifications for any of their previous signups. The signup data is preserved for your records.
Q: Can a customer sign up for alerts again after being unsubscribed?
A: Yes. If an unsubscribed customer signs up for a new product through the signup popup on your store, they will receive notifications for that specific new product. The unsubscribe only applies to existing signups at the time of unsubscription.
Q: Is there a way to bulk unsubscribe multiple customers at once?
A: Currently, unsubscribing is done one customer at a time from the customer detail page. There is no bulk unsubscribe option in the Customers tab.
Q: Does unsubscribing a customer affect their preorders?
A: No. Unsubscribing from back-in-stock alerts only affects restock notifications. Preorder notifications (order confirmations, shipping updates, payment collection) are separate and are not affected by the unsubscribe action.
Q: What is the difference between unsubscribing and deleting a customer?
A: Unsubscribing stops the customer from receiving notifications but keeps their signup data, analytics, and history in STOQ. Deleting a customer permanently removes all their data including preorders, requests, notifications, and analytics. Unsubscribing is reversible; deleting is not.
Q: Can customers unsubscribe themselves?
A: Yes. If your email templates include an unsubscribe link, customers can click it to unsubscribe themselves. Their status in STOQ updates automatically.
Q: Does the unsubscribe apply to both email and SMS alerts?
A: Yes. When you unsubscribe a customer from the dashboard, they stop receiving both email and SMS back-in-stock alerts for all their existing signups.
Q: Will I lose analytics data if I unsubscribe a customer?
A: No. Unsubscribing preserves all analytics and signup data. Only the Delete customer action removes analytics data permanently.
