How to Show or Hide the Notify Me Button on Specific Collections
STOQ lets you control which products display the "Notify me" button using product tags. While STOQ's tag settings work at the product level, you can apply them to entire collections at once by using Shopify's built-in bulk editor to tag all products in a collection in one step. This means you can effectively show or hide the Notify Me button for a whole collection — such as hiding it on a "Clearance" collection of discontinued items, or showing it only on a "Core Range" collection of products you regularly restock. The process has two parts: first, bulk-tag the products in Shopify; then configure STOQ to show or hide the button based on those tags.
Why Show or Hide the Button on Collections
There are several reasons to control button visibility at the collection level.
- Hide the button on discontinued collections. If you have a clearance or end-of-line collection, those products will never be restocked. Hiding the Notify Me button prevents customers from signing up for alerts that will never be sent.
- Show the button only on restockable collections. If only certain collections contain products you regularly restock, you can limit the button to those collections so customers only sign up for products that will actually come back.
- Manage seasonal collections. Hide the button on seasonal collections that are out of rotation until next year, and show it on evergreen collections that restock year-round.
- Reduce unnecessary signups. Fewer irrelevant signups means your waitlist data is more accurate and your alert emails go to genuinely interested customers.
How to Bulk-Tag Products in a Collection
Before configuring STOQ, you need to add a tag to all products in the target collection using Shopify's bulk editor.
- Log in to your Shopify admin.
- Go to Products from the left sidebar.
- Click Add filter at the top of the product list.
- Select Collection from the filter options.
- Choose the collection you want to target (e.g. "Clearance" or "Core Range").
- The product list now shows only products in that collection. Select all products by clicking the checkbox at the top of the list. If the collection has more products than one page, click Select all [X] products to include every product.
- Click the Bulk edit button at the top of the product list.
- In the bulk editor, click Columns to choose which fields to display.
- Enable the Tags column if it is not already visible.
- For each product, add your chosen tag in the Tags column. Use a clear, descriptive tag name such as
rocket-hideorrocket-show. - Click Save at the top right to apply the tags to all selected products.

How to Configure STOQ to Use the Tags
Once your products are tagged, configure STOQ to show or hide the Notify Me button based on those tags.
- Open the STOQ app in your Shopify admin.
- Go to Back in stock alerts from the left menu.
- Click the Products tab at the top.
- Select the Button sub-tab.
- Under the Signup Widget section, click Customize button.
- In the customizer sidebar, click Products.
- Select Specific products (instead of "All out of stock products").
- In the Product tags field, enter the tag you added to the collection's products (e.g.
rocket-hide). You can enter multiple tags separated by commas. - Under "When any of these tags are found, the app should:", choose one of the two options:
- Hide 'Notify me' widget — The button will be hidden on products that have any of the listed tags. Use this if you tagged products you want to exclude (e.g. a clearance collection).
- Show 'Notify me' widget — The button will only appear on products that have any of the listed tags. Use this if you tagged products you want to include (e.g. a core range collection).
- Click Save to apply the changes.

Setup Examples
Example 1: Hide the button on a Clearance collection
You have a "Clearance" collection with 50 discontinued products. You do not want customers signing up for restock alerts on these items.
- In Shopify admin, filter products by the "Clearance" collection.
- Select all 50 products and bulk edit to add the tag
rocket-hide. - In STOQ, go to Products > Button > Customize button > Products.
- Select Specific products.
- Enter
rocket-hidein the Product tags field. - Choose Hide 'Notify me' widget.
- Save.
Result: The Notify Me button is hidden on all 50 clearance products. It still appears on all other out-of-stock products in your store.
Example 2: Show the button only on a Core Range collection
You have a "Core Range" collection with 30 products that you regularly restock. You only want the button on these products.
- In Shopify admin, filter products by the "Core Range" collection.
- Select all 30 products and bulk edit to add the tag
rocket-show. - In STOQ, go to Products > Button > Customize button > Products.
- Select Specific products.
- Enter
rocket-showin the Product tags field. - Choose Show 'Notify me' widget.
- Save.
Result: The Notify Me button only appears on the 30 core range products when they go out of stock. All other products in your store will not show the button, even if they are out of stock.
Example 3: Hide the button on multiple collections
You have both a "Clearance" and a "Limited Edition" collection that you want to exclude from restock alerts.
- In Shopify admin, filter by "Clearance" collection, select all, bulk edit, and add the tag
rocket-hide. - Repeat for the "Limited Edition" collection — filter, select all, bulk edit, add the same tag
rocket-hide. - In STOQ, enter
rocket-hidein the Product tags field and choose Hide 'Notify me' widget. - Save.
Result: The Notify Me button is hidden on all products in both the Clearance and Limited Edition collections.
Known Limitations
Keep these points in mind when using tags to control button visibility on collections.
- Tags are applied at the product level, not the collection level. If a product belongs to multiple collections, the tag applies to the product regardless of which collection the customer is browsing.
- Tag names are case-sensitive and must match exactly between Shopify and STOQ. If you enter
rocket-hidein STOQ, usingrocket-Hideorrockethideon the product will not work. - When you add new products to a tagged collection in the future, you must manually add the tag to those new products as well. The tag is not automatically inherited from the collection.
- Changes to tags in Shopify may take a few minutes to reflect on your storefront due to caching.
- The tag setting applies store-wide. You cannot set different tag rules for different templates or channels.
- If a product has the tag and you set the behavior to "Hide," the button is hidden even if the product is out of stock and would otherwise show the button.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
Button still appears on tagged products | Verify the tag name in Shopify matches exactly what you entered in STOQ (case-sensitive). Confirm you selected Hide 'Notify me' widget as the behavior. Check that you chose Specific products (not "All out of stock products"). |
Button does not appear on any products | If you chose Show 'Notify me' widget, only tagged products will show the button. Make sure you have added the tag to the products you want to include. If no products have the tag, the button will not appear anywhere. |
Newly added products in the collection do not follow the rule | Tags are not automatically applied to new products added to a collection. You must manually add the tag to any new products. |
Changes not reflecting on storefront | Clear your browser cache and wait 5–10 minutes for any CDN or theme caching to expire. Check in an incognito window to rule out browser cache. |
Some products in the collection were missed | When bulk editing, ensure you clicked "Select all [X] products" to include products beyond the first page. Shopify's product list is paginated, and only checking the top checkbox selects the current page. |
Tag conflicts with other STOQ settings | The tag-based visibility setting works alongside "Show 'Notify me' widget on preorder products" and "Show 'Notify me' widget if any variant is out of stock" in the same Products section. Review all three settings to ensure they align with your intended behavior. |
FAQs
Q: Can I use an existing tag instead of creating a new one?
A: Yes. You can use any tag already on your products. Just enter that tag name in the STOQ Product tags field. However, using a dedicated tag like rocket-hide or rocket-show is recommended to avoid unintended interactions with tags used for other purposes (e.g. marketing, filtering, or other apps).
Q: Does the tag apply to the collection or to individual products?
A: The tag is applied to individual products. STOQ checks the tags on each product to decide whether to show or hide the button. Collections are used only as a convenient way to filter and select products in bulk in the Shopify admin.
Q: What happens if a product is in both a tagged collection and an untagged collection?
A: The tag is on the product itself, not the collection. If the product has the tag, the STOQ rule applies regardless of which collection the customer is browsing. For example, if a product is in both "Clearance" (tagged rocket-hide) and "All Products" (untagged), the Notify Me button will still be hidden on that product everywhere.
Q: Can I use multiple tags for different behaviors?
A: No. All tags listed in the Product tags field share the same behavior (either all hide or all show). If you enter rocket-hide,discontinued,seasonal-out, any product with any of those tags will trigger the same action. You cannot set one tag to hide and another to show simultaneously.
Q: Will new products added to the collection automatically get the tag?
A: No. Shopify does not automatically propagate tags from collections to products. When you add new products to the collection, you must manually add the tag to those products using the bulk editor or the individual product page.
Q: How do I remove the tag from all products in a collection?
A: Filter products by the collection in Shopify admin, select all products, and use the bulk action Remove tags to remove the specific tag. Alternatively, open the bulk editor, display the Tags column, and delete the tag from each product.
Q: Does this feature work with automated collections?
A: Yes, but with a caveat. You can filter by an automated collection to find the products and tag them. However, if Shopify automatically adds new products to the collection based on conditions, those new products will not have the tag until you manually add it.
Q: Can I hide the button on one collection and show it on another?
A: Not directly with a single rule. STOQ supports one tag behavior at a time (hide or show). However, you can achieve a similar result by tagging only the products you want to show the button on and choosing Show 'Notify me' widget. This effectively hides the button on all untagged products, including those in other collections.
