How to set up per-product back in stock templates in STOQ

STOQ lets you create custom back in stock templates so each product can display its own unique Notify Me button and signup form on your storefront. Instead of relying on a single global design for every product, you can tailor the look and messaging for VIP launches, seasonal items, limited-edition drops, or any product that deserves a distinct signup experience.

Per-product back in stock templates are managed from the Products tab inside Back in stock alerts. You can create as many templates as you need, then assign them to individual product variants in a few clicks.

Navigating to the Products Tab

Before you can work with templates, you need to reach the right page in the STOQ app.

 1. Open the STOQ app from your Shopify Admin.
 2. Click Back in stock alerts in the left-hand navigation menu.
 3. Select the Products tab at the top of the page.

Tip: If you land on the Overview or Settings tab, simply click Products to switch.

Enabling Per-Product Customization

Per-product customization must be enabled before you can assign templates or change button visibility for individual products.

 • The first time you try to change a product's Button visibility or Template setting, STOQ will display an Enable customization prompt.
 • Click Enable to turn on per-product overrides.
 • Once enabled, you can control button visibility, restock messages, and template assignments for each product variant independently.

Note: You can disable per-product overrides at any time. When disabled, all products revert to your global settings. Any per-product configurations you made are preserved and will take effect again if you re-enable the feature.

Understanding the Templates Section

The Templates section sits at the top of the Products tab. It is where you view, create, edit, and delete your templates.

 • Click View templates to expand the section.
 • You will see a Default template card (labeled Global) alongside any custom templates you have created.

The Default Template

The Default template applies automatically to every product that does not have a custom template assigned. It pulls its design from your global Signup widget settings.

 • To edit the Default template, click Edit on the Default card. This takes you to the global Signup widget customizer under Back in stock alerts → Settings → Signup widget.
 • Any changes you make to the Default template affect all products that are still set to "Default."

Custom Templates

Custom templates let you override the Default template for specific products. Each custom template can have its own:

 • Button text — e.g., "Join the waitlist" instead of "Notify me when available."
 • Button style — text color, background color, and border radius.
 • Signup form header — the title shown at the top of the signup popup.
 • Signup form description — the message explaining why customers should sign up.
 • Signup form button text — the call-to-action on the form.
 • Signup form terms text — the privacy or terms note below the form.

Creating a New Template

Follow these steps to build a custom template for a product or group of products.

 1. On the Products tab, click View templates to expand the Templates section.
 2. Click the New template button.
 3. A full-screen editor opens with two tabs: Button and Signup form.

Customizing the Button

The Button tab controls how the Notify Me button appears on your storefront for products using this template.

 1. Click Template name in the left sidebar and enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Limited Edition Drop" or "VIP Launch"). This name identifies the template in your product list.
 2. Click Button style in the left sidebar to open the button controls.
 3. Set the Button text — for example, "Join the waitlist."
 4. Adjust the Border radius (in pixels) to control how rounded the button corners are.
 5. Pick a Text color and Background color using the color swatches.
 6. Preview your changes in real time on the right side of the screen.

Customizing the Signup Form

The Signup form tab controls the popup that appears when a customer clicks the Notify Me button.

 1. Switch to the Signup form tab at the top of the editor.
 2. Click Form content in the left sidebar.
 3. Set the Header — e.g., "Be the first to know."
 4. Write a Description explaining what the customer is signing up for.
 5. Set the Button text for the form's submit action.
 6. Add Terms text to reassure customers about spam or privacy.
 7. Preview the form on the right side of the screen.

Saving the Template

 • Click Save changes in the top bar of the editor when you are happy with your design.
 • You can continue editing after saving — the editor stays open.
 • Click Discard to revert unsaved changes, or close the editor by clicking the X button.

Assigning a Template to a Product

Once you have created one or more custom templates, you can assign them to individual product variants from the product list on the Products tab.

 1. Scroll down to the product table below the Templates section.
 2. Find the product variant you want to customize. Use the search bar to filter by product name or SKU.
 3. In the Template column, open the dropdown for that variant.
 4. Select the custom template you want to apply.
 5. Click Save in the save bar that appears at the top of the page.

Tip: You can assign the same template to multiple products. Change the dropdown for each variant, then save all changes at once.

To revert a product back to the global design, set its template dropdown back to Default and save.

Editing and Deleting Templates

You can modify or remove custom templates at any time from the Templates section.

Editing a Template

 1. Expand the Templates section by clicking View templates.
 2. Find the template card you want to change and click Edit.
 3. Make your adjustments in the full-screen editor.
 4. Click Save changes.

All products currently assigned to that template will automatically reflect the updated design on your storefront.

Deleting a Template

 1. Expand the Templates section.
 2. Click the More button on the template card you want to remove.
 3. Select Delete.
 4. Confirm the deletion in the prompt that appears.

Note: Deleting a template cannot be undone. Products that were using the deleted template will revert to the Default template.

Additional Product-Level Settings

While on the Products tab, you can also configure two other per-product settings alongside templates.

Button Visibility

Control when the Notify Me button appears on a specific product variant:

 • Always show — The button is visible even when the item is in stock. Customers can sign up at any time. Note: automatic back-in-stock alerts are disabled for these variants — you will need to notify customers manually or via a bulk send.
 • When out of stock — The button appears automatically based on inventory (this is the default behavior).
 • Never show — The button is hidden on the storefront for this variant, useful for discontinued items.

Restock Message

Add a short note that appears below the Notify Me button on your storefront — e.g., "Back in stock March 15" or "Restocking soon." This helps set customer expectations and can reduce support inquiries.

Known Limitations

 • Custom templates override only the button style and signup form text. All other settings — notification channels, email colors, and delivery rules — are still managed by the Default (global) template.
 • Per-product overrides must be enabled before any template assignments, button visibility changes, or restock messages take effect on the storefront.
 • Templates are assigned at the variant level, not the product level. If a product has multiple variants, you must assign the template to each variant individually.
 • Deleting a custom template is permanent and cannot be undone.

FAQs

Q: Can I use the same custom template for multiple products?

A: Yes. Create one template and assign it to as many product variants as you like using the Template dropdown in the product table.

Q: What happens to products if I disable per-product overrides?

A: All products revert to your global settings. Button visibility, restock messages, and template assignments are ignored on the storefront until you re-enable per-product overrides. Your configurations are not deleted — they are simply paused.

Q: Does a custom template change the back-in-stock notification email?

A: No. Custom templates only affect the storefront Notify Me button and the signup form popup. Email, SMS, and push notification templates are managed separately under Back in stock alerts → Settings → Notifications.

Q: Can I assign different templates to different variants of the same product?

A: Yes. Templates are assigned at the variant level, so each variant can have its own template.

Q: Is there a limit to how many custom templates I can create?

A: There is no hard limit. Create as many templates as you need for your product catalog.

Q: Where do I edit the Default template?

A: Click Edit on the Default template card in the Templates section. This redirects you to the Signup widget settings under Back in stock alerts → Settings → Signup widget.
