How to configure notify me per product variant
STOQ lets you control the Notify Me button on a per-product-variant basis. Instead of relying only on your global settings, you can decide exactly which variants show the button, which ones hide it, and which ones use a custom signup template — all from the Back in stock alerts > Products tab.
This is useful when you want to force the button on high-demand items that are still in stock, hide it on discontinued products, or run a unique signup campaign for a limited edition drop.

Enable Per-Product Configuration
Before you can change button visibility or assign templates to individual variants, you need to enable per-product configuration. STOQ keeps this feature toggled off by default so your global settings remain in control until you choose otherwise.
- In your STOQ dashboard, go to Back in stock alerts > Products.
- Try changing the Button visibility or Template dropdown on any variant row.
- A confirmation modal appears asking you to Enable customization. Click Enable.
- Per-product overrides are now active across your storefront.

Set Button Visibility Per Variant
Each product variant in the Products tab has a Button visibility dropdown with three options. This controls when the Notify Me button appears on your storefront for that specific variant.
Option | What It Does |
|---|---|
Always show | The Notify Me button is visible even when the variant is in stock. Use this for high-demand products where you want to collect waitlist signups before inventory runs out. |
When out of stock | The button appears only when the variant is out of stock. This is the default automatic behavior and matches your global settings. |
Never show | The button is hidden on the storefront regardless of inventory status. Use this for discontinued products or variants you do not plan to restock. |
To change button visibility:
- Go to Back in stock alerts > Products.
- Find the variant you want to configure. Use the search bar to filter by product name or SKU.
- In the Button visibility column, select Always show, When out of stock, or Never show from the dropdown.
- Click Save in the top bar to apply your changes.

Add a Restock Message Per Variant
You can add a short Restock message to individual variants. This message appears below the Notify Me button on your storefront, letting customers know when you plan to restock.
- Go to Back in stock alerts > Products.
- Find the variant you want to update.
- In the Restock message column, type your note — for example, "Back in stock March 15" or "Restocking soon."
- Click Save in the top bar.

Use Custom Templates for Specific Products
Templates let you override the button and signup form design for specific product variants without changing your global settings. This is ideal for running branded campaigns — for example, an all-black button with "Join the waitlist" for a limited edition drop.
How Templates Work
- Default template — Every variant uses your global signup widget settings (configured in Settings > Signup widget) unless you assign a custom template.
- Custom templates — Override the button text, colors, border radius, and signup form content for any variant you assign the template to.
Create a Custom Template
- Go to Back in stock alerts > Products.
- Click View templates to expand the Templates section.
- Click New template.
- In the template editor, configure:
- Template name — A descriptive name to identify this template (for example, "Limited Edition Drop" or "VIP Launch").
- Button tab — Customize the button text, text color, background color, and border radius.
- Signup form tab — Customize the form header, description, button text, and terms text.
- Click Save to create the template.

Assign a Template to a Variant
- In the Products tab, find the variant you want to customize.
- In the Template column, select your custom template from the dropdown. The dropdown lists all your custom templates along with the Default option.
- Click Save in the top bar.
The variant's Notify Me button and signup form on your storefront will now use the selected template's design instead of your global settings.
Edit or Delete a Custom Template
- Click View templates in the Templates section.
- To edit, click Edit on the template card. Make your changes and click Save.
- To delete, click More > Delete on the template card. Confirm the deletion.

Manage Changes With Save and Discard
When you make changes to button visibility, restock messages, or template assignments, STOQ shows a Save bar at the top of the page. Changes are not applied to your storefront until you click Save.
- Save — Applies all pending changes to your storefront immediately.
- Discard — Reverts all pending changes back to their previously saved values.
Disable Per-Product Overrides
If you want to go back to using only your global settings:
- Go to Back in stock alerts > Products.
- Click View templates to expand the Templates section.
- Click the Disable per-product overrides link at the bottom of the section.
- Confirm by clicking Disable in the modal.
When disabled, all per-product button visibility, restock messages, and template assignments are ignored on the storefront. Your global signup widget settings take effect for all variants. Your per-product configurations are preserved in STOQ and will take effect again if you re-enable.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
Button visibility or template dropdown is not responding | Per-product configuration may not be enabled. Try changing any dropdown — if a modal appears asking you to enable customization, click Enable. |
Changes are not appearing on the storefront | Make sure you clicked Save in the top bar after making changes. Unsaved changes are not applied to the storefront. |
Variant reverted to Default template after deleting a custom template | This is expected. When a custom template is deleted, all variants assigned to it revert to the Default template automatically. |
Restock message is not showing below the button | Verify that per-product configuration is enabled and you saved your changes. The restock message only appears when the Notify Me button is visible on the storefront. |
"Always show" is set but the button does not appear | Check that the STOQ app embed is enabled in your Shopify theme. Go to Shopify admin > Online Store > Themes > Customize and verify the STOQ app embed is toggled on. |
Search is not finding my product | The search bar filters by product name and SKU. Try searching by a different term or clear the search to browse all variants. |
FAQs
Q: Does per-product configuration affect my global settings?
A: No. Your global signup widget settings remain unchanged. Per-product overrides only apply to the specific variants you configure. Any variant without a custom setting continues to use your global defaults.
Q: What happens to my settings if I disable per-product overrides?
A: Your per-product configurations (button visibility, restock messages, and template assignments) are preserved in STOQ but ignored on the storefront. If you re-enable per-product overrides later, all your previous settings take effect again without needing to reconfigure.
Q: Can I assign the same custom template to multiple variants?
A: Yes. A single custom template can be assigned to as many variants as you want. This is useful for applying a consistent branded experience across a product line or collection.
Q: How many custom templates can I create?
A: There is no limit on the number of custom templates you can create. However, keeping a manageable number makes it easier to maintain and identify which template is assigned to which products.
Q: Does "Always show" send alerts even when the product is in stock?
A: Yes. When Always show is set, the Notify Me button appears on the storefront regardless of inventory status. Customers can sign up for alerts even if the product is currently available. They will receive a back in stock notification when the product restocks after going out of stock.
Q: Can I bulk-edit button visibility for multiple variants at once?
A: You can change settings for multiple variants on the same page and save them all at once. Use the search bar to find specific products, adjust their dropdowns, and click Save to apply all changes in a single batch.
