How to Cancel Your STOQ Subscription or Downgrade Your Plan
If you no longer need a paid STOQ plan, you can cancel your subscription at any time by switching to the Free plan. You can also downgrade from a higher-tier plan to a lower one if you want to reduce costs while keeping some paid features. Both actions are done from the Plans page in the STOQ app. When you cancel or downgrade, STOQ asks you to share a reason for the change to help improve the product. After switching, your new plan takes effect immediately and you will not be charged for the previous plan going forward.
Why You Might Cancel or Downgrade
There are several reasons to cancel or downgrade your STOQ plan.
- Budget changes. You may need to cut costs temporarily and the Free plan provides enough functionality for your current needs.
- Lower usage than expected. If you are not using the full notification or preorder limits on your plan, a lower-tier plan may be a better fit.
- Seasonal needs. Some stores only need higher alert volumes during peak seasons and can operate on a lower plan during quieter periods.
- Trying out the app. If you subscribed to test paid features and have decided not to continue, you can switch back to the Free plan.
- Feature mismatch. If the features you need are not available or did not work as expected, you can downgrade while you evaluate alternatives.
How to Cancel Your Subscription (Switch to the Free Plan)

- Open the STOQ app in your Shopify admin.
- Go to Plans from the left menu.
- Find the Free plan card.
- Click the Subscribe button on the Free plan card.
- A modal titled "A quick moment" appears, asking why you are cancelling. Select a reason from the dropdown:

How to Downgrade to a Lower Plan
If you want to keep a paid plan but move to a lower tier (e.g. from Unlimited to Pro, or from Pro to Lite):
- Open the STOQ app in your Shopify admin.
- Go to Plans from the left menu.
- Find the plan you want to switch to (e.g. Lite or Pro).
- Click the Subscribe button on the desired plan card.
- A modal titled "A quick moment" appears, asking why you are downgrading. Select a reason from the dropdown.

- Shopify processes the plan change and you are redirected back to the Plans page with a confirmation.
What Happens After You Cancel or Downgrade
After you cancel or downgrade your plan, the following changes take effect.
- Immediate plan change. Your new plan takes effect right away. You are no longer charged at the previous rate.
- Notification limits change. Your notification limit adjusts to the new plan's limit. If you have already sent more notifications this month than the new plan allows, you will not be able to send additional alerts until the limit resets next month.
- Preorder limits change. Your preorder limit adjusts to the new plan's limit. On the Free plan, exceeding the preorder limit disables preorders on your store.
- SMS alerts. SMS alerts are only available on paid plans (Lite, Pro, Unlimited). If you switch to the Free plan, SMS alerts are no longer available.
- Features may be restricted. Some features are only available on higher-tier plans. After downgrading, features exclusive to your previous plan will no longer be accessible.
- Existing signups remain. Customer signups on the waitlist are not deleted when you cancel or downgrade. If you upgrade again later, those signups will still be there.
Known Limitations
Keep these points in mind when cancelling or downgrading.
- You cannot cancel or downgrade from within Shopify's billing page. The change must be made from the STOQ Plans page inside the app.
- Usage limits do not reset when you downgrade. If you have already used more alerts than the new plan allows, you must wait until the next calendar month for the limit to reset.
- SMS alerts are disabled on the Free plan. If you cancel your subscription, SMS notifications will no longer be sent.
- Uninstalling the STOQ app from Shopify is a separate action from cancelling your subscription. If you want to fully remove the app, uninstall it from Shopify admin under Settings > Apps and sales channels.
- If you cancel and later want to resubscribe, you can upgrade to any paid plan at any time from the Plans page.
- Partner stores have access to all features on the Free plan and do not need a paid subscription.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
Cannot find the Free plan on the Plans page | Scroll through the plan cards on the Plans page. The Free plan is listed alongside the paid plans (Lite, Pro, Unlimited). If you are already on the Free plan, the Subscribe button will be disabled. |
Cancel reason modal does not appear | The reason modal only appears when you are switching to a lower plan or to the Free plan. If the modal does not appear, your browser may be blocking popups. Try refreshing the page and clicking Subscribe again. |
Still being charged after cancelling | Verify that you completed the cancellation by checking which plan is shown on the Plans page. If you still see a paid plan, the cancellation may not have completed. Try switching to the Free plan again. If charges persist, contact STOQ support. |
Features stopped working after downgrade | Some features are only available on higher-tier plans. Check the feature comparison on the Plans page to see which features are included in your current plan. |
SMS alerts stopped sending after downgrade | SMS alerts require a paid plan (Lite, Pro, or Unlimited). If you downgraded to the Free plan, SMS is no longer available. Upgrade to a paid plan to re-enable SMS. |
Want to resubscribe after cancelling | Go to Plans from the left menu and click Subscribe on the plan you want. You can upgrade at any time. |
FAQs
Q: Will I lose my data if I cancel my subscription?
A: No. Cancelling your subscription switches you to the Free plan but does not delete any data. Your customer signups, notification history, templates, and settings are all preserved. If you upgrade again later, everything will be as you left it.
Q: Can I cancel at any time?
A: Yes. You can cancel your paid subscription at any time from the Plans page. There are no contracts or cancellation fees. The change takes effect immediately.
Q: What is the difference between cancelling and uninstalling?
A: Cancelling switches you to the Free plan but keeps the STOQ app installed on your store. You can still use Free plan features. Uninstalling removes the app entirely from your Shopify store. To uninstall, go to Shopify admin > Settings > Apps and sales channels and remove STOQ.
Q: Do I get a refund for unused days on my plan?
A: Shopify handles billing and prorations. When you switch to a lower plan or the Free plan, Shopify typically issues a prorated credit for the unused portion of your current billing cycle. Check your Shopify billing page for details.
Q: Why does STOQ ask for a cancellation reason?
A: STOQ asks for a reason to understand why merchants are cancelling or downgrading. This feedback helps the team improve the product. Selecting a reason is optional — you can leave it as "Select" and click Continue to proceed without providing a reason.
Q: Can I downgrade from Pro to Lite?
A: Yes. Go to the Plans page, find the Lite plan card, and click Subscribe. A cancellation reason modal will appear. Select a reason (or leave it blank) and click Continue to switch to the Lite plan.
Q: What happens to blocked notifications if I upgrade again?
A: If notifications were blocked because you exceeded your plan limit, upgrading to a higher plan shows a banner on the Plans page offering to send those blocked notifications. Click the send button on the banner to queue them for delivery.
Q: I am on a partner store — do I need a paid plan?
A: No. Partner stores (Shopify development stores) get unlimited access to all features on the Free plan. When your client takes over the store, they will be prompted to select a plan that fits their needs.
