How to add product image to signup form

STOQ lets you add a product image to your "Notify me" signup form so customers see the product photo next to the registration fields. When enabled, the current product's image appears on the left side of the popup form, giving customers a visual reminder of the item they are signing up to be notified about.

The product image:

  • Displays the selected variant's featured image, or the main product image if no variant image is available
  • Appears on the left half of the popup form on desktop screens
  • Is hidden automatically on mobile devices to keep the form compact
  • Shows on both the registration view and the success confirmation view

Before You Begin

Make sure the following are in place before you enable the product image:

  • Popup form mode selected. The product image option is only available when your "Notify me" widget uses the Button + Popup display mode. It is not available for the On page (inline/embedded) form.
  • Products have images. The product image pulls from Shopify's product data. Make sure your products have at least one image uploaded in Shopify.

Note: There are no plan restrictions for this feature. The product image option is available on all STOQ plans, including Free.

How to Add a Product Image to the Signup Form

Follow these steps to enable the product image on your "Notify me" popup form.

Step 1: Open the Form Content Settings

  1. In the STOQ app, go to Back in stock alerts.
  2. Select the Form tab at the top of the page.
  3. In the sidebar, click Form content.

Step 2: Enable the Product Image

  1. In the Content section, find the Show product image checkbox.
  2. Check the box to enable it.
  3. The help text reads: "Display product image on the left side of the form (only on desktop)."
  4. Click Save at the top of the page.

The preview panel on the right updates immediately to show a placeholder where the product image will appear.

Step 3: Preview the Form

  1. After saving, look at the Signup form preview on the right side of the editor.
  2. You will see a "Product Image" placeholder on the left side of the form.
  3. On your live store, this placeholder is replaced with the actual product photo from Shopify.

Tip: To see the actual product image, open an out-of-stock product on your store and click the "Notify me" button. The popup will show the product's featured image on the left.

How the Product Image Appears on Your Store

When a customer clicks the "Notify me" button on your storefront, the popup form opens with the product image on the left and the registration fields on the right.

Desktop View

On desktop screens (wider than 768px):

  • The form expands to approximately 800px wide
  • The product image takes up the left 50% of the form
  • The registration fields (header, description, email/phone input, submit button) fill the right 50%
  • The image uses a cover fit, meaning it fills the entire left panel without stretching or distortion
  • The image container's left-side border radius matches your form's Border radius setting

Mobile View

On mobile screens (768px or narrower):

  • The product image is hidden completely
  • The form displays only the registration fields at full width
  • This keeps the form compact and easy to use on small screens

Variant Image Support

The signup form automatically displays the most relevant image:

  • If the selected variant has its own featured image, that image is shown
  • If the variant does not have a specific image, the main product featured image is used as a fallback
  • When a customer changes the variant in the form's dropdown, the image updates to match the selected variant (if variant images are configured in Shopify)

How to Remove the Product Image

To turn off the product image and return to the standard form layout:

  1. Go to Back in stock alerts > Form tab > Form content.
  2. Uncheck the Show product image checkbox.
  3. Click Save.

The form returns to its default single-column layout without the product image panel.

Advanced Tips

Use these tips to get the best results with the product image feature:

  • Use high-quality square or portrait images. The image panel uses a cover fit, so images that are roughly square or taller than wide look best. Landscape images may be cropped at the top and bottom.
  • Pair with custom border radius. The left edge of the image panel matches your form's border radius setting. Try a border radius of 8--12px for a modern rounded look.
  • Customize form colors to complement. Use the Text and Background color pickers in Form content to ensure your form text and background work well next to the product image.
  • Test with different products. Product images vary in size and aspect ratio. Open the signup form on several products to make sure the image looks good across your catalog.
  • Check on mobile. The image is hidden on mobile, so make sure your form still looks great without it. The mobile experience is identical to the non-image form layout.

Known Limitations

  • Popup form only. The product image option is not available when the "Notify me" widget is set to the On page (inline/embedded) display mode. Switching to On page mode automatically disables the product image setting.
  • Desktop only. The product image is hidden on screens narrower than 768px (mobile and small tablets). Customers on mobile devices see only the registration fields.
  • No custom image upload. You cannot upload a custom image for the form. The image always comes from the product's Shopify data (variant featured image or product featured image).
  • Image cropping depends on aspect ratio. Because the image uses a cover fit, parts of the image may be cropped depending on the product image's aspect ratio and the form's height. STOQ does not offer controls to adjust the crop position.
  • No image on success state customization. The same product image appears on both the registration view and the success confirmation view. You cannot show the image on one view but not the other.
  • Back-in-stock forms only. This setting is part of the back-in-stock "Notify me" form editor. Preorder forms have their own separate image handling.

Troubleshooting

Symptom

Cause

Fix

Show product image checkbox is missing

The widget is set to On page (inline) mode

Switch to Button + Popup mode at the top of the Customize page to reveal the checkbox

Product image does not appear on the live store

The setting was not saved, or browser cache is stale

Click Save in the STOQ editor, then clear your browser cache or open the product page in an incognito window

Image is missing on mobile

The product image is hidden on screens narrower than 768px by design

This is expected behavior -- the image only shows on desktop

Wrong image appears in the form

The selected variant does not have a featured image, so the main product image is used

Upload a variant-specific image in Shopify under Products > [Product] > Variants > Edit > Add image

Image looks cropped or zoomed in

The image aspect ratio does not match the form panel

Use a square or portrait-oriented product image for the best fit

Preview shows "Product Image" placeholder text

The editor preview uses a placeholder instead of a real image

This is normal in the editor -- visit your live store to see the actual product image

Image disappeared after switching to On page mode

On page mode automatically disables the product image

Switch back to Button + Popup mode and re-enable the checkbox

FAQs

Q: Does the product image work with the inline (On page) form?

A: No. The product image option is only available for the Button + Popup form mode. When you switch to On page mode, the product image setting is automatically disabled and the checkbox is hidden.

Q: Can I upload my own image instead of the product photo?

A: No. The form always uses the product's image from Shopify. You cannot upload a custom image. If you want to change the image that appears, update the product's featured image or variant images in Shopify.

Q: Does the product image affect form loading speed?

A: The image loads from Shopify's CDN, which is optimized for fast delivery. In most cases, the image loads quickly and does not noticeably affect form performance. However, very large product images may take slightly longer to render.

Q: Will the image change when a customer selects a different variant?

A: Yes. If the selected variant has its own featured image in Shopify, the form displays that variant's image. If the variant has no specific image, the main product image is shown instead.

Q: Can I control the position or size of the product image?

A: No. The image always appears on the left side of the form and takes up 50% of the width. You cannot change its position, size, or crop. The only design control that affects the image is the form's Border radius setting, which rounds the left corners of the image panel.

Q: Is this setting available on the Free plan?

A: Yes. The product image option is available on all STOQ plans, including Free. There is no plan restriction for this feature.
